What rights does a private buyer have?
My nephew has bought a tipper truck privately, 20 mins into the drive home the EML came on and now a red EML (turbo boost problem) He rang the seller who denied all knowledge but said book it into a Merc dealer and he would pay. I told him to get in writing, even a text msg. Sadly garage cannot even diagnose it yet, do we have much recourse?

As this was a private purchase, sadly you don't - but the vendor appears to have been reasonable so far so perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt once you have the diagnosis. Legally, though, a private purchase gives you very little protection.
